We have been checking out the website WONDEROPOLIS.COM this week. We love to read about interesting things around the world. We decided that we wanted to submit a question for Wonderopolis to answer. The children came up with so many amazing questions. Next week, we will vote on one of these to submit! Children around the world will be able to see and learn about our question! Connecting curious minds across the globe!
Special thanks to the Popplet App for making our mind-mapping a breeze!
We have been researching animals, Geometry, and author's craft. What a better way to celebrate our learning than to make a class book that includes all of these areas?
Author Michael Hall visited our class earlier this month. He wrote a book called My Heart is Like A Zoo. We spent a few weeks looking at this book closely, particularly the vocabulary. We used our SCHEMA to help us figure out the meaning of the word "crafty." (One of the pages said "Crafty as a fox.") We remembered how the Fox acted in the story of the Gingerbread Man. We already knew SO MUCH about how foxes behave.
The way Michael Hall wrote the book, or the "AUTHOR'S CRAFT," was so interesting to the Kindergarteners. Not only did Michael Hall use cool words to describe the animals in the book, but he ALSO drew the animals using ONLY hearts.
We were inspired by Hall. We used an app called MOMA Shape Lab to create our special research animals using ONLY shapes, too! Then, we used an app called Pic Collage to describe our animal like the book did. Technology Geeks like Miss Weinstein call this "app smashing" - using multiple apps to CREATE something amazing. It is an extremely important 21st Century skill.

We learned a fun game called "Hundred Board Tic-Tac-Toe." We roll two dice - one with the decade numbers (10,20,30,40,50,60,etc) and one with numbers 1 - 10. We locate that number on a Hundred Board and put a colored dot on it. Then, it is our partner's turn. The first person to get 3-in-a-row is the winner! You can play this at home with playing cards. You can build two-digit numbers with the cards, indicating which spot to color. Ex: 4 and 2 make 42.

We are using the Doodle Buddy app on the iPad to create addition sentences using fun stamps! Please practice number formation at-home!

We are continuing to explore 3D shapes! The kids know some pretty fancy vocabulary!
STEMagination Station has been 100% teacher-funded this year. We are so excited for our June 3rd Parent Night. With all the extra children (siblings) and supplies needed, we would SO appreciate any donations for the event. The sign-up can be found HERE.
Thank you for your support!

Even though the students have yet to see the finished project, I could NOT wait to get our animal research projects up on the blog. They are AMAZING. The students wrote the scripts they are reading INDEPENDENTLY and recorded once their fluency and accuracy was solid. Without further adieu, I proudly present...
